Can an alternator overcharging damage my Mustang?

I think my alternator is overcharging because my battery voltage is spiking like crazy. Could this damage my Mustang, or is there a built-in safety feature to protect the electrical system? Any advice on fixing it before I have to replace the whole alternator?
